How to Perform Tawaf Around the Holy Ka'bah: Step-by-Step

Master the complete step-by-step method of Tawaf around the Ka'bah based on Dawat-e-Islami's Rafiq-ul-Haramayn. Learn Raml, Istilam, and Maqam-e-Ibrahim rules.

Tawaf (circumambulating the Holy Ka'bah seven times counter-clockwise) is one of the most awe-inspiring acts of worship in Islam. It symbolizes the eternal truth that Allah Almighty is the single central focus of a believer's entire existence.

Whether performing Tawaf as part of Umrah, Hajj, or as a voluntary (Nafl) act of devotion inside Masjid al-Haram, executing Tawaf according to the authentic Sunnah is essential.

Based on official Dawat-e-Islami guidebooks published in Method of Umrah (Umrah ka Tarika) and Rafiq-ul-Haramayn, this guide provides step-by-step instructions for performing Tawaf correctly.

1. Prerequisites Before Starting Tawaf

In Hanafi Fiqh (Rafiq-ul-Haramayn):

  1. Wudu is Mandatory: Being in a state of ritual purity (Wudu) is obligatory (Wajib) for Tawaf. If Wudu breaks during Tawaf, pause immediately, renew Wudu, and resume from the round where Wudu broke.
  2. Covering Aurah: Ensuring private body parts are covered properly.
  3. Idtiba' (Men Only): Uncovering the right shoulder by draping the top Ihram sheet beneath the right armpit and over the left shoulder. (Idtiba' is done ONLY during Tawafs that are followed by Sa'i).

2. Step-by-Step Method of Tawaf

Step 1: Align with Hajar-al-Aswad (Black Stone Line)

Move to the starting area inline with the Black Stone (Hajar-al-Aswad), which is marked by a green neon light indicator on the wall of the Mataaf.

Step 2: Formulate Niyyat (Intention)

Formulate intention in your heart:

"O Allah, I intend to perform seven rounds of Tawaf around Your Sacred House for Umrah (or Nafl) for Your sake. Make it easy for me and accept it from me."

Step 3: Perform Istilam (Pointing to the Black Stone)

  • Face the Black Stone directly.
  • Raise both hands to your earlobes with palms facing the Black Stone (just like starting Salah).
  • Say: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ ("Bismillahi Allahu Akbar wa lillahil-Hamd").
  • Lower hands and kiss your inner palms softly. This symbolic gesture is called Istilam.

Step 4: Complete the 7 Rounds (Shawt)

Walk counter-clockwise keeping the Holy Ka'bah to your LEFT side.

  1. Raml (Men Only in Rounds 1 to 3): During the first 3 rounds of an Umrah Tawaf, men should walk briskly with short steps, marching with shoulders broad and chest puffed out.
  2. Rounds 4 to 7: Walk at a normal, peaceful pace.
  3. Rukn Yamani Etiquette: As you pass the Yemeni Corner (Rukn Yamani), touch it with your right hand if accessible without pushing, or pass by without pointing. Recite:

  1. End of Each Round: Every time you return to the Black Stone line, perform Istilam again. Repeating this 7 times completes the Tawaf!

Step 5: Pray 2 Rak'ahs Wajib-ut-Tawaf

After completing the 7th round:

  1. Cover Right Shoulder (Men): Pull your Ihram sheet back over your right shoulder so both shoulders are covered.
  2. Move Behind Maqam-e-Ibrahim: Move to the area behind Maqam-e-Ibrahim (or anywhere inside Masjid al-Haram if crowded).
  3. Offer 2 Rak'ahs: Pray 2 Rak'ahs of Wajib-ut-Tawaf:
  • In 1st Rak'ah: Recite Surah Al-Fatiha + Surah Al-Kafirun.
  • In 2nd Rak'ah: Recite Surah Al-Fatiha + Surah Al-Ikhlas.

Step 6: Drink Zamzam Water

Proceed to the Zamzam water drinking stations:

  • Stand facing the Qiblah.
  • Drink Zamzam water in 3 gulps to your fill.
  • Pour a small amount over your head/face.
  • Make personal Duas (Dua made while drinking Zamzam is accepted!).

3. Summary Map of Tawaf Landmarks

HAJAR-AL-ASWAD (Black Stone / Start-End Line) ──► Perform Istilam │ ▼ MAQT-AL-HATIM (Semi-circle wall) ──► Pass OUTSIDE Hatim │ ▼ RUKN YAMANI (Yemeni Corner) ───────► Recite "Rabbana Atina..." │ ▼ HAJAR-AL-ASWAD (Completes 1 Round) ─────────────► Perform Istilam

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I walk INSIDE the Hatim (semi-circular wall) during Tawaf?

NO! The Hatim (Hijr Ismail) is historically part of the Ka'bah itself. If you walk inside the Hatim wall during Tawaf, that round is invalid and must be repeated outside the wall.

What if Jamaat prayer starts while I am performing Tawaf?

Pause your Tawaf immediately, join the congregational row in the Mataaf, pray behind the Imam, and resume your Tawaf from the exact round where you paused after Jamaat finishes!
