📖 About the Month of Safar
The second month of the Islamic calendar.
Safar literally means void or empty. Historically, it referred to the time of year when houses were empty as people went out to travel, forage, or engage in trade.
Islamic Year Calendar Months
The Hijri calendar is composed of 12 sequential months based on lunar sight cycles:
1. Muharram
Meaning: Forbidden/Sacred
One of the four sacred months and the first month of the Islamic year.
2. Safar Current
Meaning: Void/Empty
The second month of the Islamic calendar.
3. Rabi' al-Awwal
Meaning: The First Spring
The month of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

How the Hijri (Islamic) Calendar Works
The Islamic (Hijri) calendar is a pure lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. Because the lunar year is roughly 10 to 11 days shorter than the solar Gregorian year, Islamic dates rotate backward through the seasons. Years are designated as AH (Anno Hegirae / Year of the Hijrah), marking the historic migration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE.
