Who Cannot Receive Zakat? Ineligible Categories

Introduction

Ensuring that Zakat reaches only valid recipients is essential. Giving Zakat to an ineligible person invalidates the payment, requiring the giver to pay Zakat again.

In Fatawa Razawiyyah (Volume 10) and Bahar-e-Shariat (Part 5), Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (رحمه الله عليه) lists the ineligible categories of recipients under Hanafi jurisprudence.

Section 1: Ineligible Recipient Categories

1. Direct Ascendants (Parents & Grandparents)

You cannot give Zakat to your father, mother, grandfathers, or grandmothers, because maintaining them when in need is an absolute personal duty (Nafaqah).

2. Direct Descendants (Children & Grandchildren)

You cannot give Zakat to your sons, daughters, grandsons, or granddaughters.

3. Spouse (Husband & Wife)

A husband cannot give Zakat to his wife, nor can a wife give Zakat to her husband in Hanafi Fiqh.

4. Hashimis / Sayyids (Descendants of the Prophet's Family)

It is strictly forbidden to give Zakat or obligatory charity to descendants of Banu Hashim (Sayyids, Hashimis - descendants of Hazrat Ali, Hazrat Aqeel, Hazrat Ja'far, Hazrat Abbas, Hazrat Harith).

• Spiritual Reason: Zakat is considered the cleansing of people's wealth. Out of deep reverence for the sacred bloodline of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), Hashimis are elevated above receiving Zakat.
• How to Assist Sayyids: Assist poor Sayyids with voluntary gifts (Hadiyah), voluntary Sadaqah, or respectful personal financial support.

5. Wealthy Individuals (Saheb-e-Nisab)

Anyone who owns net surplus assets reaching Nisab cannot receive Zakat.

6. Non-Muslims

Zakat is an Islamic act of worship strictly reserved for poor Muslims. Non-Muslims may be assisted through voluntary charity (Sadaqah Nafl).

7. Public Infrastructure & Institutions (Without Tamlik)

Zakat cannot be spent on building mosques, paving roads, or paying institutional utility bills directly.
