Introduction
One of the most frequently asked questions regarding Zakat is whether Zakat is obligatory on gold and silver jewelry worn for personal adornment.
In the Hanafi school of thought and the explicit fatawa of Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (رحمه الله عليه) in Fatawa Razawiyyah (Volume 10 - Ahkam-ul-Huliy), Zakat IS obligatory on all gold and silver jewelry, regardless of whether it is worn daily, worn occasionally for weddings, or kept in storage.
Section 1: The Hanafi Position on Jewelry
While some other schools of jurisprudence exempt personal unworn jewelry under specific conditions, the Hanafi position is definitive:
Why Gold & Silver Jewelry is Zakatable in Hanafi Fiqh:
- General Quranic & Hadith Directives: The Prophet (ﷺ) explicitly commanded women to pay Zakat on gold bangles and bracelets they wore.
- Intrinsic Growth Asset (Maal-e-Nami): Gold and silver are inherently valuable monetary metals in Shariah. Fashioning them into ornaments does not strip them of their Zakatable nature.
Hadith Evidence:
Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-Aas (رضي الله عنهما): A woman came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) accompanied by her daughter who had two thick gold bangles on her wrist. Rasoolullah (ﷺ) asked: "Do you pay Zakat on these?" She replied: "No." He (ﷺ) said: "Would it please you if Allah placed bangles of fire on your wrists on the Day of Resurrection?" So she immediately took them off and handed them to the Prophet (ﷺ). — Sunan Abi Dawud (Hadith 1563), Sunan an-Nasa'i (Hadith 2479)

Section 2: Exemption of Non-Precious Gemstones
An essential distinction made in Fatawa Razawiyyah (Vol. 10) is between precious metals (gold/silver) and non-precious gemstones:
- Diamonds, Rubies, Emeralds, Pearls, Sapphires: If these gemstones are set in jewelry for personal use, no Zakat is due on the weight or value of the stones.
- Calculation Rule: Subtract the estimated weight/value of the non-precious gemstones from the total item weight, and calculate Zakat only on the net gold or silver weight.
Section 3: Practical Calculation for Mixed Jewelry Purities
Suppose a woman owns the following gold jewelry items:
- Item A: 50 grams of 22K gold necklace.
Pure Gold: $50 imes (22/24) = 45.83 ext{ grams}$.
- Item B: 40 grams of 18K gold bangles (containing 5 grams of cubic zirconia stones).
Net Gold Weight: $40 - 5 = 35 ext{ grams}$. Pure Gold: $35 imes (18/24) = 26.25 ext{ grams}$.
- Total Pure Gold Content: $45.83 + 26.25 = \mathbf{72.08 ext{ grams}}$.
- Nisab Check: If she also owns cash or silver, the Silver Nisab combining rule applies (see Mixed Assets article). If she owns only gold, 72.08g is below 87.48g Gold Nisab.
