Zakat on Real Estate & Property

Detailed guide on Zakat on property: primary home, plots bought for resale vs long-term investment, and rental property in Hanafi Fiqh and Aala Hazrat.

Introduction

Real estate is a primary vehicle for wealth accumulation. Zakat on real estate depends strictly on your intention (Niyyah) at the time of purchase.

In Fatawa Razawiyyah (Volume 10 - Zakat-ul-Aqaar) and Bahar-e-Shariat (Part 5), Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (Ψ±ΨΩ…Ω‡ Ψ§Ω„Ω„Ω‡ ΨΉΩ„ΩŠΩ‡) outlines property Zakat rules.

Section 1: Property Classifications & Zakat Rulings

1. Primary Residence (Home You Live In)

  • Ruling: EXEMPT from Zakat. (Haajat-e-Asliyyah).

2. Land / House Purchased for Resale (Maal-e-Tijarat)

  • Ruling: Zakatable at full market selling value every year on your Zakat date (2.5%).

3. Rental Property (Apartment/Shop Rented Out)

  • Ruling: The building/land itself is NOT Zakatable. Only the net accumulated rental cash saved on your Zakat date is Zakatable (2.5%).

4. Land Held for Personal Use / Inheritance (No Resale Intention)

  • Ruling: EXEMPT from Zakat.
