Zakat on Silver: Rules, Utensils, Coins & Valuation

Complete guide to Zakat on silver: Silver Nisab (52.5 Tolas/612.36g), 2.5% rate, silver utensils, coins, and market valuation in Hanafi Fiqh.

Introduction

Silver is the second primary precious metal evaluated for Zakat. In Hanafi jurisprudence and Aala Hazrat's fatwa, Silver Nisab serves as the primary benchmark for cash and mixed wealth calculations.

In Fatawa Razawiyyah (Volume 10) and Bahar-e-Shariat (Part 5), Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (رحمه الله عليه) details the rulings governing silver bullion, coins, utensils, and ornaments.

Section 1: Silver Nisab & Obligation Rate

1. Silver Nisab Threshold

  • Traditional Weight: 52.5 Tolas (52 تولہ 6 ماشہ)
  • Shar'i Weight: 200 Shar'i Dirhams
  • Metric Weight: 612.36 Grams (pure silver content)

2. Zakat Rate

  • 2.5% (1/40th) of total silver weight or its cash monetary value.

Section 2: Forms of Silver Subject to Zakat

  1. Silver Bullion & Bars: Pure silver 999 investment bars.
  2. Silver Coins: Historical or modern silver currency coins.
  3. Silver Utensils & Vessels: Silver plates, bowls, cups, trays, or decorative items.
  • Note on Silver Utensils: In Hanafi Fiqh, using silver utensils for eating/drinking is disliked/forbidden (Makruh Tahrimi), but if someone owns them, Zakat is still obligatory on their silver weight.
  1. Silver Jewelry & Ornaments: Anklets, rings, chains, silver tableware trims.

Section 3: Valuation of Silver

Zakat on silver is calculated based on the pure silver weight or current market selling rate of silver per gram on your Zakat date.

Example Calculation:

  • Asset Owned: 700 grams of sterling silver (92.5% purity).
  • Pure Silver Weight: $700 imes 0.925 = 647.5 ext{ grams}$.
  • Nisab Check: 647.5g exceeds Silver Nisab (612.36g). Zakat is Obligatory.
  • Zakat Due: $647.5 imes 2.5\% = 16.1875 ext{ grams of pure silver}$.
  • If silver rate is $0.90 per gram: $16.1875 imes \$0.90 = \mathbf{\$14.57 ext{ USD}}$.
