Introduction
A central requirement in accurate Zakat calculation is knowing which assets are subject to Zakat and which are exempt.
In Hanafi jurisprudence and the fatawa of Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (Ψ±ΨΩ
Ω Ψ§ΩΩΩ ΨΉΩΩΩ) in Fatawa Razawiyyah (Volume 10), wealth is classified into productive/growth assets (Maal-e-Nami), which attract Zakat, and essential personal assets (Haajat-e-Asliyyah), which are completely exempt.
Section 1: Growth Assets (Maal-e-Nami) β Subject to Zakat
In Shariah, Zakat applies to wealth that possesses actual or potential growth capability (Namaa').
The 5 Main Categories of Zakatable Assets:
- Gold & Silver: In all forms (coins, bars, bullion, ingots, jewelry, ornaments, utensils, vessel trims), regardless of whether worn or stored.
- Cash & Bank Balances: Cash on hand, current accounts, savings accounts, fixed deposits, digital wallets, foreign currencies.
- Business Merchandise & Trade Goods (Maal-e-Tijarat): Any inventory or stock purchased or manufactured with the intention of resale for profit.
- Receivables & Loans Owed to You (Dain-e-Qawi): Money loaned to others or merchandise sold on credit that is expected to be recovered.
- Agricultural Produce & Livestock: Subject to agricultural Ushr (10% or 5%) and specialized livestock Nisab rules.
Section 2: Personal Essential Assets (Haajat-e-Asliyyah) β Exempt from Zakat
Shariah exempts assets designed for personal and family living, survival, and professional work.
Exempt Asset Categories:
- Primary Residence: The house or apartment in which you live.
- Personal Transport: Personal car, motorcycle, or bicycle used for daily travel.
- Personal Clothing & Shoes: Daily, seasonal, and special occasion attire.
- Household Furniture & Appliances: Refrigerators, washing machines, televisions, beds, sofas, kitchenware.
- Tools of Trade & Work Equipment: Laptop used for work, professional tools, machinery used in manufacturing.
- Personal Use Non-Precious Gemstones: Diamonds, rubies, pearls, emeralds set in personal jewelry (only the gold/silver weight in the jewelry is Zakatable).
- Personal Books: Personal library or study books for scholars and students.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Are diamonds and pearls Zakatable?
No, loose or set diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and pearls kept for personal use are not Zakatable in themselves under Hanafi Fiqh. However, if they are set in gold or silver jewelry, the gold or silver weight is Zakatable. If gemstones are bought as inventory for trade, they become Zakatable trade stock (Maal-e-Tijarat).
2. Is money saved for buying a house Zakatable?
Yes. Cash held in a bank account remains liquid money (Maal-e-Nami) and is Zakatable on your Zakat date, even if you intend to buy a house in the future.
