Janazah / Islamic Funeral Guide

A gentle, authentic guide to handling bereavement, performing Ghusl-e-Mayyit, shrouding (Kafan), leading and offering Namaz-e-Janazah, and burial procedures.

01

When Death Occurs (Immediate Steps)

First responsibilities and etiquettes for family members

Recommended Immediate Actions

  • Gently close the eyes of the deceased and recite: Bismillahi wa 'ala millati Rasulillah.
  • Bind the lower jaw with a soft cloth band so the mouth remains closed.
  • Straighten the limbs gently before stiffening occurs.
  • Cover the entire body with a clean sheet.
  • Inform family members, local masjid, and community respectfully.

⚠️ Practices to Avoid

  • Avoid loud wailing or tearing clothes (Niyaḥah is prohibited in authentic Ahadith).
  • Do not delay Ghusl or burial unnecessarily. Expedition of Janazah is a Sunnah.
  • Avoid panic; maintain dignity, patience (Sabr), and quiet supplication.
02

Ghusl-e-Mayyit (Washing Method)

Obligatory ritual purification for the deceased

Performing Ghusl on the deceased is a Fard Kifayah (collective obligation upon the Muslim community). Men wash deceased men, and women wash deceased women (with exceptions for spouses according to verified Fiqh rules).

Key Steps for Ghusl:

  1. Place the deceased on a raised wooden washing table (Takht). Cover the private areas (Satr) with a thick cloth.
  2. Perform Wudu on the deceased without rinsing the mouth or nose with water (clean with wet cotton swab).
  3. Wash the head and beard with warm water infused with berry leaves (Sidr) or gentle soap.
  4. Wash the right side of the body from head to foot, then the left side.
  5. Pour water over the entire body three times. Camphor (Kafur) water is used for the final rinse.
03

Kafan (Shrouding Rules)

Requirements for male and female shrouds

Male Kafan (3 Cloths)

  • Lifafah: Outer large sheet.
  • Izar: Inner sheet from head to foot.
  • Qamis (Shirt): From neck/shoulders to below knees.

Female Kafan (5 Cloths)

  • Lifafah: Outer large sheet.
  • Izar: Inner sheet.
  • Qamis: Shirt cloth.
  • Khimar (Head veil): Covers hair/head.
  • Chest Wrap: Secures area from chest to waist.
04

Janazah Prayer (Namaz-e-Janazah Method)

Method according to Hanafi Fiqh / Aala Hazrat methodology

Janazah prayer contains 4 Takbirs and is offered standing upright without Ruku or Sujud.

1st Takbir: Raise hands to ears, say Allahu Akbar, fold hands under navel. Recite Thana with addition: Wa Jalla Thanauka.
2nd Takbir: Say Allahu Akbar (without raising hands). Recite Durood-e-Ibrahimi.
3rd Takbir: Say Allahu Akbar. Recite the authentic Dua for the Deceased.
4th Takbir: Say Allahu Akbar, then perform Salam to both right and left sides while dropping hands.
